Who we are and what we do
We are a small voluntary organisation that collects, researches and shares songs, and memories about songs, from people who live in Sheffield but who have roots in other countries. We do what we do because we are lovers of Sheffield and lovers of traditional music who want to enjoy and share the music of our city.
How we collect songs
We collect songs by interviewing individuals, or by recording singers performing their songs. We research lyrics, music and any other background to the songs we collect.
How we share the songs
We share our material in many ways:
We are very grateful to the Arts and Humanities Research Council for providing us with funding to pursue our projects.

How we share the songs
We share our material in many ways:
- By arranging events where Sheffield musicians with roots in other countries can come and perform their songs
- By arranging and performing the songs ourselves, sometimes together with those who gave them to us
- By recording CDs of Sheffield singers who have roots in other countries
- By making films based around the songs and those who brought them here
- By running workshops to teach the songs and arrangements to choirs, schools and other groups
- By building an archive of songs and oral history - people’s memories about the musical heritage they have brought to Sheffield
